Budget tips
Tips for
healthy eating on a reduced budget
Dry
goods like nuts, seeds, wholegrains, beans and pulses can often be cheaper
from health shops.
Make
you own sandwiches or soups for lunch, or make use of dinner leftovers which
are often just as tasty cold.
If
you have any leftovers and are not sure what you can do with them just look
up a recipe on the web putting in the main ingredients you have.
Alternatively be adventurous – I often make a risotto using up leftovers,
other ideas are soups or sauces. www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/recipes
Make
your own Granola or Meusli, not only will it be cheaper but you can avoid
high levels of sugar and salt and add in the extras that you like such as
seeds and nuts.
Canned
fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel are cheaper than fresh and still
contain the omega oils (tuna however has these oils removed on canning).
Buy
chicken thighs or drumsticks which are cheaper and leaner than breasts and
contain more nutrients such as iron.
Use fresh local and seasonal produce, better still grow your own fruit and
vegetables.
Pick free food such as blackberries, many people leave out windfall apples
– for a bit of work you get a delicious free dessert.
Go supermarket shopping at the end of the day and look out for bargains of
end of date food, but make sure you can cook and eat this straight away
otherwise it adds to the waste and cost.
