Arthritis
What is Arthritis
Arthritis is a degenerative condition of one or more of the joints, due to a gradual deterioration of the cartilage covering bone endings. This results in joint friction and development of bony spurs. The outcome is joint weakness and deformity. The typical age of onset is over 50 years, however it can manifest earlier. Osteoarthritis affects women more than men.
What is the cause?
Osteoarthritis is caused by gradual wear and tear over the years, joint injuries, excessive weight, previous joint problems such as gout and a defect in the protein that forms cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis is thought to be an auto-immune condition.
