Asthma
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a distressing disorder that affects people of all ages. It is an obstructive disease of the airways that causes recurrent episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath due to bronchospasms, mucosal swelling and overt mucus secretion. Asthma is usually characterised in two categories, extrinsic or allergic asthma which is seen early on in childhood and intrinsic or late onset asthma which is normally in response to a respiratory infection or bronchitis.
Typical symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, choking, a feeling of tightness in the chest and difficulty in exhalation.
What causes Asthma?
An asthma attack is most often associated with an allergen or irritant. External causes include environmental chemicals, animal hair, dust mites, mould, car fumes and cigarette smoke. Internal triggers may include food allergies (such as milk or wheat), food additives and drugs. Other factors have been linked with the precipitation of asthma in susceptible individuals are stress, fear, anxiety, changes in temperature, extremes of dryness or humidity, exercise, adrenal gland malfunction, infections and low blood sugar levels.
